NSK Kogyo Oboro Diamond Whetstone: Advanced Preparation

Hello and thank you for reading!

Today we are going to learn an advanced technique which will help us to flatten the NSK Oboro whetstone very quickly while simultaneously preparing the surface to perfection.

This is an advanced method where we will be using silicone carbide powder (SiC). I prefer to use 60/90 grit SiC powder to simultaneously flatten and prepare the surface for the three base stones i.e 200, 400, 800 only.

This method is the fastest method I have found for flattening while simultaneously preparing our base stones to give us the highest cutting power while also helping prevent the stone from becoming glassy, preventing build up (loading), of the stones surface.

If you desire to use finer Oboro stones it may be a good recommendation to choose a slightly less coarse SiC powder of around 120 grit or higher. However, I highly recommend the finner NSK flattening stones as they do an amazing job to prepare the surface of finer stones perfectly.

It is not necessary to use the front of the flattening plate. If you choose, you could use the back of the flattening plate for this purpose as well. Also, you could use a large fluttering stone of any kind as well as glass metal something of this nature.

Please watch the video in order to help understand the technique and results of this technique.
